Tracing the Berlin Wall

We started the day with gigantic mugs of coffee to fuel us for the long bike ride ahead
and lots of whip cream...

We biked from our hostel in West Berlin along the route of the former Berlin Wall. It is hard to imagine that the city was divided in two.
We ended up at the East Side Gallery, which is the longest remaining section of the wall. It is covered with murals made by artists from all over the world. The messages of freedom, peace, & love were beautiful! Here are some of our favorites (it was hard to narrow them down)...

Same mural in Italian:

Batman

"He who wants the world to remain as it is
doesn't want it to remain at all."

Stopping for a break by the river

We ended up crossing the river to find a place for lunch. The neighborhood had a very Brooklyn feel to it - lots of cool cafes and shops, energy, and an interesting and diverse crowd.

Sun streaming over the bridge

Another city... conquered.

  1. I didn't know "the wall" was so muralized. Some pretty neat paintings. But Batman??? Pretty funny. Thanks for sharing the pictures. Love you, PKL&S

  5. Unbelievable the ground you two cover in a weekend! This blog is such a source of satisfaction for those of us stuck Stateside. You'll have to do a cross-country some time. I love seeing these sights through your eyes! If I send you $$ would you go back to Tacheles and buy me that landscape out of the stack of paintings? When I'm disgustingly wealthy, I'm going to make you my art dealer, Natalie, and send you out with my personal travel planner, Dillon, to buy up beautiful works of art.
